Packard Motor Company was one of the great American automobile manufacturers that began its tenure in 1899 and built quality automobiles until 1956. During its time Packard gained the reputation of producing some of the finest and most beautiful cars in American automotive history. The make disappeared, but the name was later revived by Mr. Budd Bayliff who ran Bayliff Coach Corp from 1979-1992 in Lima OH. -- ** --
This car is not an aftermarket conversion. It was custom-built by Bayliff coach on a 1983 Buick Riviera chassis. These automobiles were delivered with a General Motors Warranty. Yet, these automobiles were appointed with Packard amenities including a hand-rubbed walnut dash and interior trim, a 1941 Packard grill, Cormorant hood ornament, front bumper, hand-fitted chrome-plated tail lamps, banjo-style steering wheel and Packard badges. The multi-lacquered exterior finish reflects the Grand Packard’s elegant ancestors. -- ** --
The cost for these automobiles at the time was a hefty $55,000 new. Celebrities such as Al Davis, owner of the L.A. Raiders football team owned a similar one, in which he paid a handsome $65,000 for at the time. -- ** --
There were only a handful of these automobiles manufactured between 1981 and 1983. This coachbuilder kept alive the memories for many who remember the elegance of a Packard. There are only a few of today's specialty automobile companies that have earned the distinction of being true custom coachbuilders. Packard Bayliff Custom Automotive is one, and this American-made Bayliff Packard is destined to be an appreciating automobile for collectors.
